”A perfume is like a piece of clothing, a message, a way of presenting oneself … a costume … that differs according to the one who wears it”, said Paloma Picasso. Perfumes are thus an essential piece of ‘clothing’ in one’s wardrobe.

The art of making fragrances is an ancient one. Also is the art of gifting perfumes. People gift perfumes for various reasons. Rather there are as many perfumes as there are reasons and occasions. That is also the reason why perfumes are ofteb considered as the best gifts to give to someone. It not only makes a statement but also shows the style, taste and character of the person who is gifting the perfume. The enchanting fragrance of a well made perfume can send one’s senses to a far away place. Fragrances are also known to help de-stress someone or even make them feel good. Choosing a right perfume is as much an art because it has to match the personality of the wearer.

Perfume History

The ancient Emperors, kings, aristocrats were the sole holders of perfumes. They paid handsomely for them and since they were very costly, common folks could never imagine wearing one for themselves. The Egyptians, Arabs, Romans, French and even the Asians were aware about various fragrances and they made various expeditions to gain access to the many well known perfumes of the day.  To extract aroma from different natural products, the Islamic cultures used the technology of distillation.  It was later adopted by the Western countries and  further developed into newer products.  France played a leading role in the development of perfumes and due to its initiatives, chemical perfumes were invented.  This invention changed the whole perfume industry and hence France gained major foothold in the perfume industry.  These technological advancements helped to reduce the cost of making perfumes and the common man to enjoy it.

The perfume chemistry

The major categories of perfumes are decided according to the percentage of  essential oils in them.  Perfume is essentially a mixture of denatured ethyl alcohol and essential oils.  Among these two, the quantity of denatured ethyl alcohol remains around 78% to 99%.  The quantity of essential oils varies between 22% and 1%.  The best quality of perfume is itself known as Perfume (22% essential oils) whereas Eau Fraiche (1% to 3% essential oils) is the lightest of the all the perfume categories.  The other categories are Eau de Parfum (EDP 15% to 22% essential oils), Eau de Toilette (EDT with 8% to 15% essential oils) and Eau de Cologne (4% essential oils).
